Volunteer abroad for women in India

VTINWO1 - More projects

VTINWO1 - Jaipur

Volunteers here are welcome for a minimum of 4 weeks.

Despite increasing school enrollment and an improvement in literacy among women, a conservative and male dominated society has restrained their development and empowerment. In these circumstances there are some easily identifiable special groups of women that need special care and support. Among such groups are slum-dwelling or daily labouring women, illiterate adolescent girls, victims of domestic violence, and orphans.

A number of projects that are available in the city of Jaipur, ranging from large, long-established but under-supported institutions to small-scale women empowerment initiatives. Volunteers come in daily contact with some of the most needy women being sheltered by the projects and directly and positively influence their lives in the long run.

Volunteers engage in some of the following activities:

  • Teaching conversational English, computer and general arithmetic.
  • Preparing case studies of victims of domestic violence or abandonment.
  • Boosting morale through fun activities, creative workshops or vocational training.
  • Taking part in rallies, preparing posters and distributing handbills related to women's issues.
  • Creating awareness amongst women about their rights against abuse and issues like the dowry problem, alcoholism, domestic violence and the dangers of HIV/AIDS.

Female volunteers can be immensely helpful in spreading knowledge of family planning and sexual health as these issues are considered taboo in the conservative Indian society.
