Volunteer abroad in AIDS projects in Tanzania
Volunteers here are welcome for a minimum of 4 weeks.
This is a support group counselling for those who have recently discovered that they are infected with HIV. It provides an opportunity for them to share their experiences and fears in a supportive environment, in which they can receive advice and hope from those who’ve been infected with HIV for a long time.
A further aim is to educate those with HIV about using condoms, nutrition, medication and how to prevent HIV from developing into AIDS. Home visits are also made to HIV-positive members of the community in order to offer them food and encouragement. There is a football team for the HIV-positive, as well as a choir.
Volunteers can assist with the home visits, participate in the support groups, coach football and join with the choir. All of the people working at the project are infected by HIV. Volunteers at this project should have a thorough understanding of the causes, effects and spread of HIV and AIDS. They need to be knowledgeable and comfortable in discussing and advising people in HIV and AIDS related matters.
