VTPEDS1
Volunteers with a sufficient level of Spanish are welcome for a minimum of 2-4 weeks.
This project started in 2002, is managed by nuns and aims to provide care for physically and mentally disabled children, adults and elderly people. It is located in a new building and the facilities are maintained well. It is divided in two sections, one with about 14 heavily disabled children aged up to 14 years old, and another where adults and older individuals with disabilities stay. Some of the children get special education in the morning in 3 classrooms, along with children that come here from outside the project. Apart from the Mother Superior, there is also a doctor, a number of nurses, a physiotherapist and maintenance staff.

There are also doctors, a language therapist, physiotherapists, a psychologist and nurses working in the clinic, which is also open to the public.
Volunteers help the children eat, play with them and lift them out of their wheelchairs before physical therapy. There is also a need for physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nursing staff. A house for children with mental disabilities, it accommodates about 45 children divided in spaces for girls and boys. There are also some deaf children without mental disabilities here. The project is funded by a Spanish organization that funds many other charities. Disabled children are not easily accepted in Peruvian society and are kept inside the house. The goal of the project is to protect the children, give them a place to stay, food and the opportunity to pursue an education. They are aged between 1 and 12 years old. In the morning they go to a special education school and they have activities in the afternoon between 14:00 and 19:00.
Volunteers help with activities and help the children learn how to dress, eat, keep personal hygiene and do their homework. There is no set structure and volunteers can come up with creative activities.
Students of psychology, speech therapy and physiotherapy can also help here. However, volunteers must show initiative, because there are no professionals and no specific materials here.

This project shelters deaf and mentally disabled children and is managed by the Peruvian government since 1975. There are about 200 persons here aged 4 to 25 years old. About 170 children have an intellectual handicap and 30 children are deaf. There are about 30 teachers divided among the project's 3 schools for special education: a small child school, a primary school and a technical school that teaches wood working, wool weaving and clothes making.
The project is open from 08:00 to 13:00 but volunteers can also work in the afternoon at the technical school. Psychologists or physiotherapists are especially needed here.
