Himachal

Himachal, IndiaHimachal projects are available from March to December.

The “region of snowy mountains” as its name means, it is located in the western Himalayas and has been an area contended by Gurkhas, Sikhs and the BritishHimachal, Indiamany times in its history. The main source of income and employment is agriculture, and Himachal is also rich in hydroelectric power, due to the abundance of perennial rivers.

Due to its difficult terrain, it has remained largely untouched by external customs. Projects here are located around the regionally important town of Palampur and located 30 km from Dharamsala, the capitalHimachal, Indiaof the exiled Tibetan government and centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture, adding another cultural dimension to the numerous learning opportunities on offer.

Note: January and February in Himachal are rather cold, but with no rain and clear, bright skies. July and August are very humid, due to the heavy rains.

Volunteers based in Himachal stay in one of two camps, which are equipped with all necessary facilities and equipment to provide a safe, comfortable stay. Rooms are shared by 1-4 volunteers (depending on the camp) and contain Indian (squat) toilets and bucket showers. There is purified water, recreational facilities and free internet access. In all camps there is a camp manager that manages day-to-day camp operations, a project executive who supports volunteers in their work areas and many support staff that provide driving, cooking & cleaning services, in addition to workshops and yoga sessions.
