Volunteer abroad in Masai villages in Tanzania
Volunteers here are welcome for a minimum of 4 weeks.
A traditional Masai village, at Olkokola there is a primary/secondary school and a hospital nearby. Lengijave is situated just behind Olkokola, separated by a big hill, and also has a primary school, with a kindergarten under construction. The villages are located about an hour's drive from Arusha, and are reachable by the local public minibus (“daladala”).
The Masai are traditionally nomadic herders of cattle, and are struggling to integrate into mainstream society. Many children and adults in the community have little knowledge of the English language, however are eager to learn, and in some cases, their employability is increased with better English skills.
Volunteers are needed to teach basic English conversation & writing skills to children and adults. The existing English language skills of the students vary, and volunteers need to assess and subsequently group students accordingly. The volunteers can also create other after school activities for the children.
Olkokola has a house where volunteers can stay, while there is no electricity, and water is carried with donkeys from the closest water source, about 2 km away. Volunteers in Lengijave can stay in a traditional Masai home (“Boma”) or stay in Olkokola and walk over the hill.
