Volunteer abroad in disability projects in India
Volunteers here are welcome for a minimum of 4 weeks.
Lack of awareness, poverty, limited resources and apathy are leading to the neglect of mentally and physically challenged children. This is leading to a shortfall in education and care possibilities in the city of Jaipur, which is struggling to care for its differently able population. Only a handful of government institutions and a few well-intentioned but resource-poor NGOs are running special schools and vocational centres. The objective is to educate and empower them so that they can live in society with dignity and independence.
Even to give attention, provide care and show affection to such often neglected children has the potential of making significant difference to their morale and sense of self-worth. Volunteers help the projects immensely by teaching English and general arithmetic to those who are able to learn, making family visits for creating greater sensitivity and interest among parents, counselling for confidence building, organizing picnics, excursions and other educational visits, health check-ups, indoor and outdoor games, and more.
Specially educated volunteers can prepare individual case studies, help improve the curriculum in cooperation with the teachers, teach music, painting and other fine arts, as well as instruct in vocational skills such as weaving and carpentry.
