Jaipur

Jaipur, the "Pink City" of India, was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, and today has a population of more than 5 million residents. The first planned city of India, it is located in the desert lands of what once was an independent princely state. In the present date, Jaipur is a major business centre with all requisites of a metropolitan city.

The city is remarkable among Indian cities for the width and regularity of its streets, which are laid out into sectors separated by broad avenues. The urban quarters are further divided by networks of gridded streets.

Five quarters wrap around the east, south, and west sides of a central palace quarter, which encloses a sprawling palace complex (the Hawa Mahal, or palace of winds), formal gardens, and a small lake. Nahargarh Fort crowns the hill in the northwest corner of the old city.

The city receives most of its rainfall in the frequent, heavy rains and thunderstorms of the monsoon months between June and September. Temperatures remain relatively high throughout the year, with the summer months of April to early July having average daily temperatures of around 30°C.

The winter months of November to February are mild and pleasant, with average temperatures in the 15-18°C range and little or no humidity. There are, however, occasional cold waves that lead to temperatures near freezing.

Volunteers in Jaipur are accommodated in a gated guesthouse with up to 3 other volunteers in an en suite room. All staff and facilities necessary for preparing food and providing assistance are here, and participants reside in a welcoming and supportive environment, suitable for comfort, socialization, and cross-cultural exchange.
