Volunteer abroad in schools in South Africa
VTSASC1
Volunteers here are welcome for a minimum of 2 weeks.
This project aims to increase the level of English comprehension among the local population. Language instruction and practice is done through local preschools and through workshops given to older children and unemployed or illiterate adults.
At the preschool level, it involves working with 5 preschools in the local community, providing support through volunteer involvement and equipment. The children are aged between 2 and 6 years of age, and are just now learning English. Volunteers assist teachers with playing games, reading stories, organising their day, speaking English, and generally entertaining the children throughout the morning.
Worksheets and teaching aids which help through each workshop are provided, as is training until volunteers are confident with their tasks. Other duties include:
- Home visits for sick and disabled people
- Paying personal attention to the children coming to the centre everyday
- Visits to children’s wards in the local hospitals
- Visits to other NGOs (for the physically disabled, old age homes etc.)
