Volunteer abroad in sports education projects in India

VTINSP1-2 - More projects

VTINSP1 - Rajasthan / VTINSP2 - Himachal

Volunteers here are welcome for a minimum of 4 weeks.

Sports in India are tremendously popular, but athleticism is not a high priority in schools. Sports activities and facilities are not supported adequately by the government and many kids lack a regular and fun exercise that can stimulate their motor function and their ability to be part of team work. More than anything else they lack teachers who can present them varied kinds of sport, function as role models and be their coach.

This project aims to utilise volunteers to provide what is lacking in formal sports education. Volunteers first participate in an orientation programme to help them become familiar with cultural aspects of Indian society and prepare them for the following weeks of sports teaching.

The necessary support and equipment for all activities will be provided. Sports activities can be carried out during sports periods and at volunteer-initiated sports gatherings in the evening. The most popular sports are volleyball, basketball, football and cricket, but other sports and games are welcome.

A part of the work is also about developing sports facilities, which can be anything from setting up a volleyball court, preparing the football pitch, building football goals and improving sports equipment.

Please note: Volunteers in India are not assigned to a specific project until they have arrived at the project site. There, they visit the various available placements, and make a more informed choice about their preferred placement.

This happens for a number of reasons. For example, some volunteers may be better able to help in a specific project due to previous experiences, and that becomes more clear in the field. Furthermore, there is an integrated development plan for the community, which means that a number of projects are active within a community at the same time, and we need to ensure availability of volunteers in as many projects as possible. If all the volunteers wish to work on a particular type of project, we would have too many people on one project and not enough on another.

This is why we also ask potential participants to indicate their top 3 choices when they apply. Specific daily tasks are listed on our website for each type of project. For each placement there are many specific projects - e.g. many schools, many orphanages, etc. - and volunteers are assigned according to the criteria listed above.
